Rama had sent Hanuman to Mount Kailash to get the lingam to conduct the puja on an auspicious time, but Hanuman could not reach on time, and Sita made a lingam of sand and performed the puja on time. When the puja was over, Rama announced that anyone who takes bath in the Danudkodi and prays to the Shivalingam, will be known as Ramalingam. Hence, the place came to be known as Rameshwaram after the deity called Ramanathswamy. Later, the lingam brought by Hanuman was placed near the sand lingam, as per Rama's instructions.
